Concert posters have become an integral section in the auctions at Hake’s Americana & Collectibles, attracting music and art fans alike. In their auction that closed on March 13-15, 2018, Hake’s cranked up the volume with concert poster sales over $10,000 and several that far exceeded preauction estimates.

The highest sale amid this category was the Otis Redding boxing style poster that reached $14,278. Advertising the 1966 show at Carr’s Beach, Annapolis, MD, it was created by Globe Poster-Baltimore. It also features Garnet Mimms, Sam & Dave, Patty LaBelle, Percy Sledge, and others.

A Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company black light concert poster was another high seller, hammering for $11,239. Depicting psychedelic day-glo art by Dail Beeghly, the 1968 poster also advertises the Jeff Beck Group for a show at the Alexandria Arena Roller Rink.

A Count Basie “Big Show of 1956” boxing style jazz concert poster sold for $6,425, well over the $1,000 to $2,000 estimate. For the show at the Sports Arena Toledo Ohio, it also advertises Dinah the Queen Washington, the Great Joe Williams, Charlie Ventura, and others.

The first printing Woodstock Festival poster with art by Arnold Skolnick, fetched $2,855, exceeding the estimate of $1,000 to $2,000. The poster for the incredible 1969 festival in White Lake, NY, advertises memorable performers like The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and Jimi Hendrix, among others.

A Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention poster from 1969 was a major surprise when bidders pushed it to $1,598, quadrupling the high-end estimate of $400. Made for the concert at the Ford auditorium in Detroit, MI, it depicts a stylized portrait of Zappa.
