During Heritage’s Entertainment & Movie Memorabilia Auction – taking place on April 15, 2018 – original works of art will be featured in the official exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. “Star Trek: 50 Artists. 50 Years.” highlights 50 international artists, including Leonard Nimoy who portrayed Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series.
On offer are sculptures, paintings, illustrations, and mixed media works curated by CBS Consumer Products for the exhibit’s 2016-2017 global tour. Since debuting at Comic-Con in 2016, “Star Trek: 50 Artists. 50 Years.” has gained international acclaim and the artwork imagery has appeared on numerous officially licensed Star Trek merchandise including a hardcover art book of the same name.
Fine art paintings and photography featured in the auction include Nimoy’s photograph titled Hand In Vulcan Gesture; The Final Frontier, an oil on canvas, by Australian Nicky Barkla; and Make it So, a large scale oil on panel by U.K. artist Paul Oz. This latter piece depicts an upclose portrait of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, portrayed by actor Patrick Stewart on television and in feature films for 15 years.
Illustrations paying tribute to the franchise’s popular characters include The New Yorker contributor Stanley Chow’s Teleportation of Mr. Spock; French art director Patrick Connan’s Revenge Is A Dish That Is Best Served Cold; and Senior Concept Designer at Lucasfilm Animation Amy Beth Christensen’s Don’t Believe In No-Win Scenarios.
“This is the first time a body of work like this has ever been offered at auction at one time,” said Giles Moon, an Entertainment Consignment Director at Heritage. “The artworks are marvelous and truly capture how Star Trek’s television programs and films have influenced generations of artists around the world.”
Additional Star Trek-themed sculptures featured in the auction include Assimilation, a lighted mixed media sculpture, by Mattel Hot Wheels toy designer Neal Smith; a model of the U.S.S. Bellwether by artist Lynn Norton; and Home Is Where The Journey Is, a mixed media work of the U.S.S. Enterprise by Calvin Ma.
