Hake’s Auctions is beginning 2019 with a comics-focused internet auction, which is now open for bidding. Featuring superheroes, Westerns, all-ages, and horror titles, the auction contains 285 lots of Golden to Modern Age comics. Among the mostly third party certified books are many key books and character debuts.

Anchoring the auction are major keys like Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 3.0 (first Spider-Man), Amazing Spider-Man #1 CBCS 4.5 (first J. Jonah Jameson and Chameleon), X-Men #1 CGC 4.5 (first X-Men and Magneto), and Batman #121 CBCS 4.0 (first Mr. Freeze).

Some of the books that saw early bids were Edge of the Spider-Verse #2 CGC 9.8 (first Spider-Gwen), Fantastic Four #49 CGC 4.5 (first full Galactus), Avengers #196 CGC 9.6 (first Taskmaster), Conan the Barbarian #1 CGC 6.0 (first Conan), and Journey Into Mystery #112 CGC 4.5 (Thor vs. Incredible Hulk battle issue).

Two of Marvel’s superhero teams are represented well, including X-Men #4 CGC Qualified 7.0 (first Brotherhood of Evil Mutants), #14 CGC 5.5 (first Sentinels), and #102 CGC 9.8 (featuring Juggernaut, Black Tom Cassidy, and Misty Knight), and Fantastic Four #45 CGC 6.0 (first Inhumans) and #52 CGC 6.5 (first Black Panther). Featured DC offerings are Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane #71 CGC 9.2 (second Silver Age appearance of Catwoman) and Justice League of America #6 CGC 3.5 (origin, first appearance of Professor Amos Fortune).

Additional key superhero books include Whiz Comics #61 CGC 8.0 Court copy with “Plaintiff’s Exhibit” ink stamp on cover, Ghost Rider #1 CGC 8.0 (first Ghost Rider, Carter Slade), and Black Panther #1 CGC 9.0 (Jack Kirby story).

Western titles are led by Rocky Lane Western #4 CGC 7.0 Crowley pedigree, Red Ryder Comics #49 CGC 8.5 (photo back cover, frontispiece) and #71 CGC 8.5 (Fred Harman cover and art), and Lone Ranger #2 CGC 6.5 (cover with Silver).

Horror titles that’ll scare up the bids are Haunt of Fear #5 CGC 2.5 (Bill Gaines, Al Feldstein, and Johnny Craig stories), Tales from the Crypt #24 CGC 2.5 Canadian edition and #44 CGC 5.0 (Guillotine cover), and Vault of Horror #40 CGC 2.5 (last issue).

Family friendly fare is led by Disney’s Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #15 CGC 4.5 Restored (five-page Dumbo text story) and #31 CGC 3.5 Qualified (beginning of Carl Barks’ Donald Duck stories), Uncle Scrooge #5 CGC 8.0 (featuring Donald Duck, Gyro Gearloose, Huey, Dewey, and Louie), and Four Color #199 CGC 5.0 Qualified (featuring Donald Duck and the triplets).

A few other lots to watch are Richie Rich Money World #1 CGC 9.6 File copy (first Mayda Munny), Star Wars #1 CGC 8.0 (first issue of the movie adaptation), and The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #1 and #3 signed cover proofs.

Hake’s comics auction is open now through January 24 at hakes.com. They will host more comic-focused internet auctions throughout 2019 and their next premier auction, which runs in February-March, will contain many key comics.
