Two covers penciled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein recently sold in ComicConnect’s fixed price marketplace for impressive numbers. The comical and memorable cover to Action Comics #354, featuring Superman battling the nerdy Captain Incredible, sold for $55,000, and the equally entertaining female empowerment cover to Superman #180 went for $75,000.
The incredible Curt Swan began his stint at DC Comics after his discharge from the armed forces. During WWII, Swan crafted art for the military magazine, Stars and Stripes, for most of the conflict. He quickly worked his way up the ranks at DC and found himself illustrating Action Comics, Superman, Superboy and Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen. Throughout his turns on the books, Swan shaped the look and feel of Superman comics throughout the Silver Age while laboring under the strict constraints of editor Mort Weisinger’s house style.
“Curt Swan rose to prominence thanks to his concise and clean style and his ability to tell stories with a deceptively simplistic, yet deft, hand,” said Vincent Zurzolo, COO of ComicConnect. “He left an indelible mark on the Kryptonian hero which continues to influence Superman creators today.”
“ComicConnect’s original comic art marketplace continues to flourish, as prices are continually on the rise and collectors spare no expense to obtain these unique treasures,” Zurzolo continued. “Original comic art is a sound financial investment and we are happy to assist collectors establish their own portfolios.”
