The upcoming Suicide Squad movie is looking like it’ll be a good flick. Putting the spotlight on some charismatic villains in the DCU, such as Harley Quinn and Deadshot, it is poised to be a summer blockbuster.

Let’s take a look at the hotheaded team member. El Diablo was created by Robert Kanigher and Gray Morrow, debuting in All-Star Western #2 in 1970. Since his introduction, El Diablo has had three iterations.

The original El Diablo, which means “the devil” in Spanish, was Lazarus Lane. Lane was originally a bank teller in the American Old West during the 19th century. He was almost killed by thieves and ended up in a coma after being struck by lightning. He was revived by Wise Owl, a Native American shaman, and became the vigilante El Diablo.

In Jonah Hex Vol. 2 #11, it was revealed that El Diablo has been cursed to serve as the host of a demon that acts as a Spirit of Vengeance. Lane’s body remains in a coma while El Diablo is up and walking around. Swamp Thing Vol. 2 #85 showed Wise Owl as more of a villain with Lane/El Diablo as an unwilling servant.

That story featured many of DC’s Western heroes like Jonah Hex, Bat Lash, Madame .44, and Johnny Thunder. Otto Von Hammer and Jason Blood hired them to defeat Wise Owl and take from him a crystal containing the spirit of Swamp Thing. After the group killed Wise Owl, Lane’s comatose body awoke and El Diablo vanished.

Lane appeared in a New 52 backup feature in All-Star Western. In that story he was cursed by Wise Owl to host the demon, but rather than be in a coma, Lane was awake. However, El Diablo could take over his body anytime Lane was unconscious.

The second El Diablo was Rafael Sandoval, created in 1989, by Gerard Jones and Mike Parobeck. He was set in the modern DC world in a comic that lasted for one year and four months. Sandoval was a rookie member of the Dos Rios, Texas city council. After being slowed down by officials regarding a serial arson case, he created El Diablo from a festival costume, boxing persona, and local legends about the devil. He also fought drug smugglers, investigated a serial killer, and hunted for human traffickers.

He made appearances in Justice League comics, possessed by the spirt of an Aztec god and took on an appearance similar to Lane as El Diablo. He appeared in the Villains United Special after being pulled out of retirement by Oracle to serve with the Justice League. He was attacked by a member of the Royal Flush Gang during a fight at Enclave M prison in Sonora Valley, Mexico. He was wounded but the warden of the facility saved him from death.

The current El Diablo is Chato Santana, an ex-criminal who meets the still comatose Lane when he’s in the hospital. In the New 52 he’s a member of the Suicide Squad. Santana will star in the Suicide Squad movie, played by Jay Hernandez.
