Star Trek: The Original Series was a television series created by Gene Roddenberry that ran from 1966 to 1969. The cultural phenomenon followed the adventures of the USS Enterprise, led by Captain James Tiberius Kirk. But just how well do you know this cunning, albeit cocky, captain?

James T. Kirk was born on March 22, 2233 in Riverside, Iowa. Coincidentally, the real Riverside, Iowa has a plaque announcing them as the future birthplace of the famed captain. After joining Starfleet Academy, Kirk was the only student to ever beat the Kobayashi Maru – by reprogramming the computer to make the "no-win scenario" winnable.

Kirk received commendation for his original thinking and was promoted to advanced training on the USS Republic. Shortly thereafter, Kirk was promoted to lieutenant junior and returned to Starfleet as a student instructor. After graduating in the top 5%, Kirk served as a lieutenant on the USS Farragut.

Eventually, Kirk made history, becoming Starfleet's youngest captain serving aboard the USS Enterprise. Although Kirk is known for his romantic flings with various women (and species), his one true love has always been his ship. Second only to his love for his crew, especially first officer Spock and chief medical officer Leonard McCoy.

William Shatner portrayed Captain Kirk in the original series from 1966 to 1969, voiced Kirk in Star Trek: The Animated Series from 1973 to 1974, and returned to the role for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 as well as the six subsequent films.

In the rebooted series including Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and the upcoming film Star Trek Beyond, Kirk is portrayed by Chris Pine.

Star Trek Beyond is scheduled to hit theaters on July 22, 2016.
