If you play with fire, you’re bound to get burned. This pop culture quote is often used to warn against dangerous behavior, or dangerous associations. While the advice is meant figuratively, given as warning against dating woes or dealings with unsavory characters, when said in conjunction to DC Comics’ Fire, it is meant, quite literally.

Superheroine Fire, is a hot number in the DC universe. Also known as Green Fury, she was created by E. Nelson Bridwell and Ramona Fradon and made her first appearance in Super Friends #25 in October 1979.

Born Beatriz da Costa, she was raised in Rio de Janeiro. After beginning her career in the entertainment industry, she transitioned to working for a Brazilian espionage group. Through natural talent as a spy, and the use of a pyroplasm ray gun that could turn organic material into energy, Beatriz proved one of their best agents. During a mission to retrieve the gun that had been stolen, she was caught in a pyroplasm blast, endowing her with a set of hot powers.

The original Green Fury had many abilities, including the power to exhale mystical green fire. She can control her flame breath, which allows her to fly and land like a rocket, along with the ability to turn the hot flame into a cold freezing burn. The green flame also has the power to magically heal and can repair her costume post-battle.

While her powers are incredible, they became enhanced to a greater magnitude. During the Invasion crossover, when alien Dominators set off a metagene bomb in the atmosphere, most of the DC characters were affected. Fire found that her powers were magnified deeply, giving her the ability to turn her body into green flame, allowing her to fly more easily and throw blasts of fire, similar to the Human Torch. Unfortunately, in this form, solid objects can pass through her without harm. The new ability needed a great deal of adaptation on her part, since her emotions were tied to the transition, causing her to become the green flame involuntarily when she was stressed or angry. She learned to harness the power, though passionate outbursts still caused the change.

Fire’s abilities extend beyond super powers. She is also a skilled investigator and espionage agent, and possesses some resistance to mind control when instructed in English, since her native language is Portuguese. As a great team player, she is a part of the teams Checkmate, Global Guardians, Justice League, and Super Buddies.
