Quantcast

DC Comics is no stranger to creating some truly terrifying supervillains. During the late ’50s into the early ’60s, they graced us with characters such as Deadshot, Captain Cold, and Trickster. But while you may know all about those villains, just how much do you know about the man behind the mirror?

Mirror Master, a/k/a Sam Scudder, created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, made his debut appearance in The Flash #105 in 1959. Initially, Scudder was just a simple convict who aspired to get inside a mirror's reflection. After much research and experimentation, Scudder stumbled into a hall of mirrors and was able to step into his own reflection. He used this incredible power, which included the ability to travel through mirrors and trap others in them, to become the Mirror Master. More often than not, Scudder found himself battling against superhero, The Flash.

As this is the comic universe, Scudder wasn't the only one to take up the mantle of Mirror Master. The Evan McCulloch version of Mirror Master, created by Grant Morrison and Chas Truog, made his first appearance in Animal Man #8 in 1989. McCulloch suffers a sad past, including abandonment and being sexually assaulted as a child. Eventually, McCulloch takes up a life of crime and becomes one of the most renowned mercenaries in the U.K. Later a consortium of the U.S. government offers the costume and weapons of Mirror Master to McCulloch, in exchange for his assistance. The partnership is short lived, but McCulloch keeps the costume and name.

Over the years, Mirror Master has been affiliated with The Rogues, Secret Society of Super Villains, Injustice Gang, and even the Suicide Squad. Sam Scudder's version of Mirror Master made an appearance on both the 1990 and 2014 series of The Flash, played by David Cassidy and Grey Damon, respectively.
