Lemony Snicket, a/k/a Daniel Handler, was born on February 28, 1970 in San Francisco, California. Ever since he was a young boy, Handler has always been a rather voracious reader. Growing up he attended Lowell High School, before going on to graduate from Wesleyan University in 1992. In the same year, Handler was awarded the Connecticut Student Poet Prize - an award he claims was earned by ripping off Elizabeth Bishop.

Only a few of Handler's major works have been published under his real name. The first being, The Basic Eight, an intense novel that was rejected 37 times before being published. His second book, Watch Your Mouth, follow an operatic theme, mixing Jewish mythology with modern sexuality. In 2011, Handler published the book, Why We Broke Up, which has received the Michael L. Printz honor award.

During 1998, Handler began writing A Series of Unfortunate Events under the pseudonym, Lemony Snicket. The 13-book series follows the turbulent lives of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire after their parents' death places them in the custody of Count Olaf. On various occasions Handler has showed up at author appearances as “Lemony Snicket's handler” (get it?). In the 2004 film, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Handler portrayed Snicket by providing the commentary track.

Under the Snicket pseudonym, Handler has also written short fiction and picture books, including Thirteen Observations made by Lemony Snicket while watching Occupy Wall Street from a Discreet Distance, and the series of novels All the Wrong Questions. Snicket himself even has his own website, which includes an incredibly vague autobiographical section.

While Snicket may remain a mystery, did you know the Baudelaire children are preparing to unlock countless other mysteries once more? The Netflix original series, A Series of Unfortunate Events is now available and ready for binging!
