Across the world of pop culture, the jungle is an incredibly popular backdrop for some of the more iconic characters. From Tarzan and George of the Jungle to the recently rebooted Planet of the Apes, things are always heating up on the jungle floor. In 1937, history was made when a female comic character starred in her very own jungle-themed series. Do you know who this is?

Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, created by the industry legends Will Eisner and Jerry Iger, made her debut appearance in Joshua B. Power’s British magazine Wags #1 in 1937. Her first stateside appearance happened in Fiction House’s Jumbo Comics #1, and subsequently in every issue between 1938 and 1953. During 1942, Sheena starred in the groundbreaking 18-issue spinoff, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, which marked the first comic book to title-star a female character.

Sheena’s father, Cardwell Rivington, was on an expedition in Africa and took his young daughter along for the ride. After accidentally drinking a potion made by Koba, a native witch doctor, Sheena is sadly orphaned. Koba takes Sheena in and raises her as his own, teaching her all the ways of the jungle and various central African languages. When she is older, Sheena becomes the “queen of the jungle” and begins adventuring with a monkey sidekick named Chim. Not only does she possess the ability to communicate with wild animals, but she is proficient in fighting with knives, spears, bows, and makeshift weapons. Most of the time her adventures involve dealing with slave traders, evil white hunters, native Africans, and wild animals.

Eventually, Sheena meets a hunter named Bob Reynolds (alternately called “Bob Reilly” or “Bob Rayburn”), who becomes her mate. One who is constantly in need of rescuing. Over the years, the comic icon had inspired several popular film and television adaptations. Now, on August 2, 2017, Sheena is swinging back into action in an all-new comic series from Dynamite Entertainment. You can read more about this exciting new series on Scoop.
