During the 1940s, Timely Comics – as Marvel Comics was then known – introduced the comic world to one of the most patriotic and heroic heroes of all time. This was of course, Captain America. He made his debut appearance in Captain America Comics #1, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. The timely introduction of the character occurred a full year into World War II and a year before the Pearl Harbor attacks, bringing much needed hope to the masses. The debut issue, which saw the super soldier punching Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, sold nearly one million copies.

In an effort to boost morale, Captain America Comics were even included in care packages sent oversees to soldiers. Captain America came to have a very tangible effect on the actual war, even avidly encouraging kids into purchasing war bonds. Between 1941 and 1942, Timely also ran the membership – Captain America’s Sentinels of Liberty. Children would mail in a dime and be issued a complete membership kit, consisting of a brass (later copper) badge and an official membership card. This would all be mailed in an illustrated envelope. As a member of the Sentinels of Liberty, children needed to pledge to the three principles: In God we trust, allegiance to the flag and the constitution of the United States of America, and to make myself a better citizen and defend my government forever.

Did you know you have the chance to bring this membership kit home? Hake’s Americana & Collectibles Auction #221 is open for bidding.
