In 2014, a neo-noir action thriller directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch introduced the world to John Wick. This retired hitman, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, has little left in his life that he cares about. Namely, his vintage 1969 March 1 Mustang and a beagle named Daisy. The car he’s had forever, but the dog was a gift from his late wife to help him cope with her passing. One day, while out for a drive, Wick encounters a trio of Russian gangsters at a gas station. The leader, Iosef Tarasov, insists on buying the car, but Wick refuses. That night, the mobsters follow him home, knock him out, steal his car, and kill poor Daisy.

Needless to say, Wick is livid. Stepping out of retirement, Wick begins searching for Tarasov for revenge. This vengeance-fueled trip leads Wick down a rabbit hole of past jobs and mistakes. It turns out Iosef is the son of Wick’s old boss, Viggo Tarasov, the head of the Russian crime syndicate in New York. Viggo attempts to talk Wick out of seeking retribution, while also planning a 12-man hit-squad against him. After this failed hit, Viggo places a $2 million bounty on Wick’s head. Following a rollercoaster of near death moments, Viggo and Wick come face-to-face in an epic showdown. In the end, Wick is wounded but Viggo is dead. After getting stitched up at an animal clinic, Wick walks off into the sunset with his new pitbull puppy.  A sequel to this film, John Wick: Chapter 2, was released in February 2017.

But did you know John Wick is also returning in an additional medium? This September 2017, Dynamite Entertainment will release a new comic book series based on the successful movie franchise. Leading the series is writer Greg Pak (The Totally Awesome Hulk) along with artist Giovanni Valletta (James Bond). Instead of continuing the storyline seen in the two movies, John Wick will take readers all the way back to the start of Wick’s career.

“I’m a huge Keanu Reeves fan and loved the John Wick movies, which had the kind of kinetic action and intriguing mythology that seemed like a perfect fit for comics. I'm also always happy to work with my friends at Dynamite, who are always a pleasure to make comics with,” Pak said in a statement.

This exciting new series will launch digitally and in comic book stores this September.
