If there is one thing people can't resist it’s adorable dogs. Pop culture has introduced us to several iconic pups, from Scooby Doo and Snoopy to Krypto and Lassie. One famous hound made his debut appearance in comic strips before transitioning to animation and film. Do you know who this is?

Marmaduke, initially created by Brad Anderson and Phil Leeming, made his first appearance in 1954 in a self-titled strip. Anderson drew the strip from 1954 to 2015, with additional help from Leeming between 1955 and 1962, as well as Dorothy Leeming from 1963 and 1969. Since 2004, Anderson’s son Paul has co-drawn the Sunday comic strip. Following Brad Anderson’s passing in 2015, strips co-drawn with the help of his son continue to be syndicated in newspapers. The strip itself revolves around the Winslow family and their Great Dane, Marmaduke. In addition to the messy but lovable Marmaduke, the Winslow family is made up of parents Phil and Dottie Winslow, their children Barbara and Billy, and their cat Carlos. The Winslows’ neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Snyder, are often featured in the comic strip as well. Along with the Sunday strip, the series includes a “Dog Gone Funny” feature, in which panels are devoted to dog anecdotes submitted by fans.

In 1978, Brad Anderson won the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award for Newspaper Panel Cartoon, followed by the George Arents Pioneer Medal for Syracuse University alumni in 1999. Over the years, several attempts have been made to cancel Marmaduke. However, these attempts have drawn severe protest from fans, especially by readers of The Toronto Star, the Sarasota Herald Tribune, and the Chicago Sun-Times. During 1980, Ruby-Spears produced Marmaduke segments for the animated series Heathcliff – also based on a comic strip character. This animated series featured the voice work of Paul Winchell (The Paul Winchell Show) and Russi Taylor (the voice of Minnie Mouse). More recently, Marmaduke made the leap from the small screen to the silver screen in the live-action Marmaduke movie.

This film starring Owen Wilson, Lee Pace, Judy Greer, William H. Macy, Steve Coogan, Sam Elliott, Fergie, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, and Kiefer Sutherland –  follows the Winslow family as they make the big move from Kansas to California. Of course, with a dog like Marmaduke along for the ride, trouble is bound to follow them.

It’s been 63 years since that initial comic strip and yet Marmaduke continues to pave the way as one of pop culture’s most famous furballs.
