Golden Bell Entertainment is currently working on The Sunday Comics, a newspaper size tome filled with nothing but comics. Over 250 pages of full color comics will appear in the debut issue.

Compiled on white newsprint, it will be filled with all types of comics, including strips, serialized comic books, political, editorial, gags, and illustrated stories, covering science fiction, comedy, fantasy, and horror. There will even be an archive section from The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library, King Features, Universal UClick, Creators, and Washington Post with popular stories about Spider-Man, Nancy, the Phantom, and Marmaduke.

The impressive list of contributing artists includes Bill Sienkiewicz, Dave Proch, Francois Gomes, Guy Gilchrist, Jorge Gutierrez, Kelley Jones, Keren Katz, Mark Mariano, Paige Braddock, Sam Ellis, Todd Weinkam, and many others.

In preparation for the launch of The Sunday Comics and to whet the appetites of comics fans, they released a sample portion of preview art.

The first strip wonderfully illustrates the generational dissidence The Sunday Comics will face. A father and son are both reading the funnies – dad on a newspaper and his son on a tablet. Of course, the father wants the young lad to read them in the traditional form. This will, indeed, be the challenge for The Sunday Comics. Many fans of the funnies will love the purist style of newsprint, but the tech savvy crowd may find the large pages cumbersome. Personally speaking, I hope the purists win.

Popular characters like Garfield, Dennis the Menace, Archie, Popeye, and the Rugrats make appearances alongside titles like BC, Futurepast, and FluffyPuss Doomsday Cat. There’s a great gag poking fun at a stock market frenzy, a fun trip down memory lane in the days of playing pretend before video games, and a trippy full page comic following a delightfully unconventional path.

The full breadth of topics and genres mean that just about everyone can find a comic that they will enjoy. Some will make you laugh, some will make you think, and almost all of them will entertain.

The plan is to launch The Sunday Comics in the near future. Keep informed of the progress at www.thesundaycomics.com, on Facebook, and on Twitter.
