Doctor Who's Tom Baker is returning to space once more, only this time it won't be at the helm of a blue police box. Instead Baker was announced as part of the season three cast for the animated TV show, Star Wars: Rebels. That's right, Baker is joining the Star Wars universe!

This award-winning series airs on Disney XD and has been a worldwide hit since its release in 2014. Star Wars: Rebels is based in the Star Wars universe predating the 1977 movie, Episode IV: A New Hope. It's voice cast already has an impressive list of names including Freddie Prinze, Jr. (Fred in the Scooby-Doo films), David Oyelowo (Selma, Interstellar), and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Baker will be playing the mysterious Bendu, who despite being neither Sith or Jedi uses the powers of the Force. Rebels showrunner and Doctor Who fan himself, Dave Filoni, announced the exciting news at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016 held in London's ExCel. Filoni told host Warwick Davis (Porridge in Nightmare In Silver) that Baker's character would be making a "big difference" to the series, and described Baker as "bigger than life."

Whovians may recall that Baker is not the first Doctor to provide a voice in a Star Wars animated series. David Tennant was also cast by Filoni in the previous spin-off The Clone Wars, a role which earned the actor an Emmy.

Fans can look forward to regular appearances by Baker, including the two opening episodes which heavily feature Bendu. Star Wars: Rebels is scheduled to air later this year on Disney XD. In the meantime, you can view a trailer for the new season, featuring Bakers' unique tones.
