After a few years’ worth of radio silence, Samus Aran finally had her day in the sun at E3 thanks to a few announcements from Nintendo. Besides the announcement that Metroid Prime 4 is now in development, it was revealed during the Nintendo Treehouse presentation that a new 2D platforming Metroid will be coming to the 3DS handheld: Metroid: Samus Returns.

The game is being called a “reimagination” of the old Game Boy title, Metroid II: Return of Samus. Several upgrades include free-aim shooting for Samus, “aeion abilities,” a Metroid detector, map pins, and more. The game’s soundtrack will also be composed by two people who were involved with composing the Super Metroid soundtrack, which should give the game a classic feeling.

The game will release on September 17, 2017. It will also be available in a special edition which comes with a 25-track soundtrack called the “Samus Archives,” which contains tracks from games across the Metroid franchise. Two amiibo figures will also be produced, including a squishy Metroid. The trailer can be seen below.
