It was reported in August that Disney will be launching their own streaming services starting in 2018 – one for films and television and a second one for sports. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced on September 7, 2017, that both Marvel and Star Wars titles will be also be exclusively streamed on the new platform for films and television when that arrives in 2019.
“I have described a very rich, treasure trove of content for this app,” Iger said at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2017 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in Los Angeles. “We’re going to launch big, and we’re going to launch hot.”
As a result of the original announcement regarding these new streaming services, Disney confirmed it would be pulling its movies from Netflix beginning in 2019. Disney purchased a majority stake in digital media company BAM Tech in order to power these new services.
