Archie Comics is bringing legendary detective Dick Tracy back to comic books. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this all-new monthly series, launching April 2018, will be focused on the early days of the hardboiled detective with a rebooted origin to offer a fresh take on his formative years.

Originally created by cartoonist Chester Gould, Dick Tracy first appeared in the Detroit Mirror newspaper in 1931. The character went on to appear in countless newspaper strips, comics, as well as film and TV adaptions. At the helm of this new series is Archie Comics co-president Alex Segura and Michael Moreci, with art by Thomas Pitilli.

“I was thinking about Dick Tracy and how cool it would be to have him back in comic form,” shared Segura. “I shot Scott Cameron at Tribune Content Agency a quick email asking about the rights, not expecting it to go anywhere, but it turned out the Tribune guys were looking to get Tracy back into comics, so everything rolled from there.”

“Dick Tracy is an iconic character, who still resonates with his fan base. The reboot of the franchise will keep Dick Tracy and his cast of rogue villains at the forefront of heroic characters in the battle of good and evil,” read a statement from Tribune.

The debut issue of Dick Tracy, which features a cover by Francesco Francavilla, will be available on April 11.
