Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will be teaming with LeBron James on the planned Space Jam sequel, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. Coogler will be producing the film; Random Acts of Flyness creator Terence Nance is set to direct the project for Warner Bros.

The production of the film is slated to begin in 2019, during the NBA offseason. James is set to star in the movie in a similar fashion to how Michael Jordan starred in the original.

“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” James told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”

The original Space Jam released in 1996 and was a live-action/animation hybrid comedy film that placed Jordan alongside the likes of Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes crew. Having made more than $230 million at the box office, it is the highest-grossing basketball film ever.
