Netflix has announced five new anime series that will be coming to the streaming platform, with one of these being based on the Pacific Rim films.
This anime series will be set in the larger Pacific Rim universe and will tell the story of two siblings who must learn to drift together in order to pilot an abandoned Jaeger robot, while at the same time looking for their missing parents. There is no animation studio attached to this, but Netflix did confirm that it will be produced by Legendary Entertainment and will feature Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution) as showrunners.
Altered Carbon was also announced, to be based on the novel by Richard K. Morgan that Netflix has previously adapted into a live-action show. Dai Sato, known for his work on Cowboy Bebop, will lead this project.
Cagaster of an Insect Cage, based on the manga of the same name about people turning into giant bugs, is also in the works. It’s to be directed by Koichi Chigara (Full Metal Panic!) and will be animated by Studio Gonzo (Afro Samurai). Graphic novel Trese will also see an anime adaptation; it’s about a girl who takes on a supernatural underworld. Jay Oliva (The Legend of Korra) is attached as executive producer.
A totally original anime will also be developed, which Netflix is calling Yasuke. The main character is loosely based on the historical African samurai Yasuke, and is to be voiced by Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out). The series is being helmed by LeSean Thomas (The Boondocks) and will be animated by MAPPA (Yuri!! On Ice).
These shows will start hitting Netflix in 2019.
