Katsuhiro Otomo’s popular work Akira will be seeing new life, and soon – a new anime project is in the works, as well as a 4K remaster of the original 1988 film.

Otomo announced at his Anime Expo panel on July 4, 2019, that he will be working with Sunrise in order to remaster his original film and work on a new series. The remaster will come out first in Japan on April 24, 2020, with a release in the U.S. to come later.

The series is still in development, but it was said at the panel that the plan is to adapt the entirety of the manga; the original film came out while the manga was still being released, and accordingly features a slightly different story and ending. Warner Bros. has been working on developing an American live-action film adaptation, set for a 2021 release, to be directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).
