Following the success of the Over the Garden Wall one-shot and then the miniseries that came after, this critically-acclaimed series is back with a new, ongoing storyline. Issue #1 first follows Greg, as he’s transported back into the mysterious Unknown while he chases after his frog. Though he solves a case involving a rather large tomcat and is quickly transported back, it’s unlikely that it’ll be his last visit to the Unknown.
The second half of the book looks at The Woodsman’s Daughter – a minor yet incredibly important character to the overall story – as she seeks to reunite with her father who has been enslaved by the Beast. It sheds light on a character that didn’t exactly have a whole lot of screentime in the Cartoon Network series and expands the world by just that much.
The Over the Garden Wall comic series is definitely more for people who have already watched the animated miniseries; those who are already familiar with the Unknown and the cast of characters within are likely to appreciate this story more. However, it may pique the interest of casual readers and drive them to look into the other media in the series. Regardless, it’s a solid book from cover to cover.
