In the conclusion of “The Truth” storyline, Wonder Woman deals with a few challenges that go beyond brute ability to emotional strength. She comes face to face with the God of War, knows that her mother and sisters on Themyscira are in terrible danger, and must face Phobos and Deimos the terrifying, and downright annoying, sons of Ares.
This story lasted a bit longer than it needed to, but Greg Rucka wrote a very good ending to it. Wonder Woman learns about the inner workings of the conundrum that allowed her to leave her home and never return. The whole issue has a parent-child dichotomy with the children making decisions and the parents dealing with the consequences.
The final confrontation with Phobos and Deimos was definitely not what I expected, but it made sense given the tone of the issue. The ending is a gut punch, but drawn by Liam Sharp with such emotional precision that it’s beautiful.
