The cadets have another run-in with the Sharg, and while it’s just a baby creature, unfortunately for them, they’re without their mech partners. After defeating one, they and the janitorial staff are shocked to discover that the facility is actually totally overrun with the small monsters, which means that drastic measures have to be taken in order to ensure the safety of everyone inside. But the ultimate fate of the academy and the cadets themselves isn’t one that anyone could have ever predicted.

Mech Cadet Yu continues to be an absolute blast to read from cover to cover. The book certainly plays to the tropes of classic giant robot stories but still manages to include a number of surprises that are bound to throw even the biggest mecha fan for a loop. While fans of Gundam and similar series might get more out of this book, the balance of action, comedy and drama means it’s likely to appeal to just about anyone.
