When the Earth’s resources are dried up, humans explored the sky, terraforming and colonizing other planets. The central group of planets created the Alliance to establish rule over all, spawning a war, which they won. Many of the Independence fighters migrated to the edges of the system to avoid Alliance control as much as possible.

Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew stay on the edges, working as smugglers or whatever they can – within reason – outside of Alliance control. After Serenity, their ship, malfunctions, they land on an unfamiliar moon seeking a job in order to purchase new parts to get back in the sky. What they find is a group of pilgrims looking for “ruffians and scoundrels” to keep them safe as they travel.

Greg Pak did a great job on this debut of the title at BOOM!. The style and tone mirror the show and the dialogue and lingo match the characters very well. It’s already addressing few threads from the show, like Mal’s reluctance to deal with how the war affected him or Book’s faith and how he relates to his crewmates and those outside.

It’s a promising start to the title.
