During World War II, Namor worked alongside Captain America, Bucky Barnes, and Jim Hammond (the original Human Torch) in order to battle the Axis Powers as The Invaders. But now, Namor is igniting a new war between the surface world and the ocean-dwellers, and all anyone wants to know is why he’s doing so. With Namor attempting to conquer the surface, Jim, Bucky, and Steve all look into their own pasts for an explanation. All four are haunted by the ghosts of WWII, and they must each take a hard look at their own actions in order to account for the events of the present.

Namor has always been a complicated character, but this is perhaps him at his absolute worst – a tyrant ruling over the various sea kingdoms, and one who’s gone completely mad, at that. It should be interesting to see how Steve, Bucky, and Jim attempt to bring him back into a more stable grasp on reality, though I don’t see things going quite so well.

The artwork on this book is sublime, particularly with how it changes (without losing the overall style of the book) during flashbacks. Chip Zdarsky has established himself as one of the more compelling comic writers out there over the last few years, and if anyone can breathe new life into these Golden Age characters, it’s bound to be him. This will absolutely be a series worth reading with every new issue.
