After projecting her consciousness across the galaxy to try and find her brother, Shuri accidentally led a music-loving space insect to Earth. And though the alien was defeated, it left behind a growing black hole that needs to be accounted for, leading Shuri to track down Tony Stark for some advice. The two are able to figure out how to reverse the black hole before it gets any worse, but Shuri’s biggest adversary is a different kind of force – the pressure from seemingly everyone around her to take on the mantle of Black Panther in her brother’s continued absence.
The Shuri series has been a real joy to read so far, because the creative team is clearly determined to make the character stand on her own, rather than simply existing in the shadow of the Black Panther. Her ingenuity in taking down both a black hole and a seismic villain alongside the likes of Iron Man – and never once feeling as though she is second banana to him – really helps her to stand out inside the crowded Marvel universe. Shuri is a real fun book to read so far, and it looks like it’s only going to continue to get better; make this one of your must-reads for any Marvel fan.
