Unificators have been hunting the remaining Browncoats that they consider to be war criminals, and Boss Moon of the Unificators has made it her mission to capture Serenity’s Captain Malcolm Reynolds and first mate Zoë Washburne. After briefly joining forces, Boss Moon has jettisoned an escape pod with Mal in her custody, prompting the Serenity crew to plan a rescue mission deep in Alliance territory.
In the two settings for the issue, complicated emotions arise for nearly everyone involved. Mal and Moon hate each other for what they did during the war, yet there’s an underlying regret and perhaps even mutual understanding that they aren’t admitting – yet. On Serenity a few crew members are ready to dive in to save Mal while others are reluctant to join a very risky mission.
Now that the fast-paced somewhat crazy pilgrims sacrifice/local gangs/bounty hunters arc is over, writer Greg Pak has slowed things down. It gives the characters the chance to develop a bit more contextual story, the opportunity to confront their feelings, and likely gear up for some thrilling heroics.
Firefly has found a good home with BOOM! Studios, though the art of Georges Jeanty is missed by this reviewer.
