A GoFundMe campaign has been created to assist Bill Wahl, a comic book retailer with stores based in Mechanicsburg and York, Pennsylvania. Last year, Wahl suffered renal failure, and is now facing financial challenges for the medical bills and cost of follow-up visits. It’s an issue that plagues many within the comic community, including creators, freelance writers and artists, as well as retailers.

Wahl, a single father of two, has undergone several procedures on his kidneys, including a nephrostomy, a stent, and two lithotripsies.

Comix Connection, the stores that Wahl co-owns, have been operating for nearly 30 years. The stores have developed long relationships with loyal customers, some of whom have been shopping there since the stores opened. They support Free Comic Book Day and Halloween Comic Fest, as well as hosting special events for the store anniversary and Black Friday. Comix Connection also regularly has canned food drives to donate to those in need.

The GoFundMe campaign was created by novelist and comic book writer Brian Keene. On the GoFundMe page, Keene describes Wahl’s impact on the comic and gaming community in the area.

“Comic book creators often go without health insurance for ourselves, but we forget that the retailers who champion our work and put it in the hands of readers are often in the same predicament,” Keene wrote on the page.

Members of the comic community can donate to help Wahl at GoFundMe.
