Actress Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne on The Walking Dead, appeared in her final episode of the AMC series on Sunday, March 22, 2020. But, fans of the sword-wielding heroine may get to see her again. According to The Walking Dead Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple, Michonne will likely appear in the franchise’s planned Rick Grimes movie trilogy.

Michonne had ventured away from the group in search of weapons to combat the Whisperers and discovered some shocking evidence that Rick Grimes could still be alive. Through a radio conversation with her and Rick’s daughter, Judith, Michonne decided to stay out on the road to find “the brave man.”

“Is it fair to assume? It’s definitely fair to assume that,” Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of seeing Michonne in the movies. “There might even be her own story along the way. Some of it has to do with the way we’re playing around with the story right now. There’s this whole new story strand opened up with her departure. Angela and I talked in very broad ways at the beginning of the season that with Michonne, who stopped and helped someone in Andrea, it changed her life.”

“We look at these stories as, ‘What was the point of her story? What was it all about?’” he continued. “At the end of her journey where she has these unbelievable hints about Rick and a direction to go in, she still stops to help someone. That’s who she is and who she’s become. In some ways, even though she has a whole lot of story ahead of her, that completes her journey on The Walking Dead.”

The last three episodes of the season will explore characters’ reactions to Michonne’s departure and that story will continue on in The Walking Dead movies. At this point, it is unknown how involved Michonne will be in those movies.
