Disney has announced that the live-action adaptation of Mulan will be released on Disney+ beginning September 4, 2020. It will differ, however, from other titles on the Disney streaming service because it will be a separate paid rental. The movie will be available as a rental to at-home viewers for $29.99.

The Mulan rental will be available in most of the Disney+ markets, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and some countries in Western Europe. Disney plans to release the film theatrically in markets where there is no Disney+ and theaters are open.

“In order to meet the needs of consumers during this unpredictable period, we thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring this exceptional family-friendly film to them in a timely manner,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek said. “We see this as an opportunity to bring this incredible film to a broad audience currently unable to go to movie theaters, while also further enhancing the value and attractiveness of a Disney+ subscription with this great content.”

The movie’s release has been delayed several times since theaters have been shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was originally planned for March 27, becoming one of the earliest movies to delay because of COVID-19. Mulan was moved to July 24 then bumped again to August 21 prior to this move to Disney+.

Mulan stars Yifei Liu as the titular heroine with Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee, Rosalind Chao, Yoson An, and Tzi Ma.
