Who watches the Watchmen? Emmy voters. During the 72nd Emmy Awards, Watchmen, the nine-episode limited series at HBO based on the DC comic, won four of the major Emmy awards.

Regina King won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Angela Abar/Sister Night. She became the first star from the Watchmen to win an Emmy.

Damon Lindelof and Cord Jefferson took home the Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special for the sixth episode, “This Extraordinary Being.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II then won Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his performance as Cal Abar, the alter ego of Jon Osterman/Doctor Manhattan.

The show took home its biggest prize by winning the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. Watchmen made history by becoming the first show based on a comic to win the award.

Along with the four wins, Watchmen was also nominated for several other Emmys. Jeremy Irons was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for playing Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias and Jean Smart was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for playing former Silk Spectre II/Agent Laurie Blake. Both Jovan Adepo and Louis Gossett Jr. were also nominated for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

The show was also nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special for the episodes “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice” for Nicole Kassell, “Little Fear of Lightning” for Steph Green, and “This Extraordinary Being” for Stephen Williams.
