The CW, Warner Bros. TV, and Berlanti Productions announced that Supergirl is ending after the upcoming sixth season. It was not specified if the show was cancelled by the network or if the showrunners decided that it was the right place to end it.

The writers are currently mapping the 20-episode final season and it is set to begin production in Vancouver later in the next few weeks.

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement,” Supergirl star Melissa Benoist wrote in an Instagram post. “Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.”

Supergirl premiered in the fall of 2015 on CBS, introducing Kara Danvers as she became Supergirl and balanced working at CatCo. The series moved to The CW for the second and subsequent seasons where Supergirl built a team of fellow heroes and faced season-long villains.

The show’s conclusion marks the second Arrowverse show to end, following flagship Arrow, which concluded in January 2020. Though the Arrowverse is losing Supergirl, the House of El will still be represented in the new show Superman & Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch – who were introduced on Supergirl.

A definitive premiere date has not been set, but Supergirl is expected to return in 2021.
