Disney and Marvel announced that the Scarlett Johansson-led Black Widow movie has been moved back to a May 7, 2021 release. The movie will now be released a full year after it was originally set to premiere in May 2020.
This decision was likely made after the theatrical releases of Tenet and The New Mutants saw lackluster results. It also means that no major Marvel Cinematic Universe films will be released in 2020.
Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow sees Natasha Romanoff returning to her pre-Avengers life when she learns that Taskmaster is controlling the Red Room and some highly skilled assassins.
Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) and also stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, and David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian.
Other upcoming releases that have recently been reshuffled include Death on the Nile moving to December 18, 2020, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings moving to July 9, 2021, Eternals moving to November 5, 2021, and West Side Story moving to December 10, 2021.
