Disney+ has previewed the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, which will feature some “what if?” storylines in which characters from different timelines meet.
“The Holiday Special has something you will never see in Star Wars otherwise which is all the characters from across all timelines crashing together,” executive producer James Waugh said. “Normally story groups are so concerned about maintaining this amazing galaxy so that it feels cohesive, it was liberating to do this in a way that’s charming and fun.”
The animated special is set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when the Resistance is getting ready to celebrate Life Day on Kashyyyk. Rey travels to the Jedi Temple and is sent on a timeline-crossing trip through important moments from Star Wars movies.
During Rey’s adventures, she will get the chance to fight Darth Vader, meet a young Luke Skywalker, and meet a young Kylo Ren. Han Solo will appear in the special, as his young swaggering self and his older, grumpier self. Obi-Wan Kenobi will appear in three different periods of his life.
Inspiration for the crossover concept is due in part to how kids play with all Star Wars toys together, rather than by trilogy sets.
“We started realizing that the way they play with them isn’t with canonical separation, it’s not, ‘Let’s put all the classic trilogy sets here, the prequel sets here, new sequel sets here,’” Waugh said. “My son literally just dumps his bucket out. We realized that was a play pattern that could actually inform the fun of this show.”
The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is set to stream on Disney+ on November 17, 2020.
