Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández’s The Old Guard series is building on its history in the anthology story arc, The Old Guard: Tales Through Time. Image’s six-issue miniseries will begin in April 2021 and features the work of multiple creators.

Rucka and Fernández contributed stories to the anthology, and are joined by Vita Ayala, Brian Michael Bendis, Kelly Sue Deconnick, Matt Fraction, David F. Walker, Horacio Altuna, Rick Burchett, Valentine De Landro, Justin Greenwood, Kano, Nicola Scott, and others.

“I’m always a little stunned when people want to come and play with our toys, to be honest,” Rucka said in a feature at Polygon. “It helps me with my own writing. It’s easy to get set onto a track with a character or an idea – having someone come in from outside for a visit, so to speak, allows a fresh perspective, and pushes me to rethink my own assumptions and conclusions about these characters.”

“It’s amazing, and a beautiful exercise, to see how other minds conceive, understand and even suggest something over what we’ve done from scratch. This opens a new way to understand how these characters could be seen from other eyes. All of a sudden, they have a life, a voice of their own,” Fernández told Polygon.

Rucka and Fernández’s story follows Andy through many battles with her only constant companion – her battle axe. Nicky and Joe spend an evening in Berlin in 1932, fighting Nazis and drinking with drag queens in a story by Andrew Wheeler and Jacopo Camagni.

The Old Guard: Tales Through Time #1 comes with cover A by Fernández (Diamond Code FEB210016), cover B by Jacopo Camagni (Diamond Code FEB210017), and cover C interconnecting battlefield variant by Leandro Fernández (Diamond Code FEB210018). The first issue will be in comic shops on Wednesday, April 21.
