Actress Mira Furlan, known for Babylon 5 and Lost, died on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. It was announced via her Twitter account on January 21. She was 65 years old.
Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski shared a message on Twitter, writing, “Mira was a good and kind woman, a stunningly talented performer, and a friend to everyone in the cast and crew of Babylon 5, and we are all devastated by the news. The cast members with whom she was especially close since the show’s end will need room to process this moment, so please be gentle if they are unresponsive for a time. We have been down this road too often, and it only gets harder.”
On Babylon 5, Furlan played Delenn, the Minbari ambassador to the space station. She went on to star in all five seasons of the show. She also starred in the TV movies, Babylon 5: In the Beginning and Babylon 5: Thirdspace.
In 2004 she joined Lost as Danielle Rousseau, a scientist who had been shipwrecked on the island 16 years before the present group. She was featured as a recurring guest star in the early seasons.
Furlan was born in the former Yugoslavia on September 7, 1955. She worked on stage and was a member of the Croatian National Theatre then moved to the US in 1991.
Her other onscreen work included voicing Silver Sable in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and guest spots on Night Stalker, NCIS, and Law & Order: LA. She was in Just Add Magic, The Art of Murder, Space Command, and completed Burning at Both Ends before she passed away.
