ComicLink has just concluded the first two nights of the Winter Featured Auction on February 23-24, 2021, with some record results for certified comic books.
“In the 25 years we’ve been running ComicLink, we’ve never seen the market grow at such a fast pace with prices on many key comic books closing at auction this week for prices that are between 30% to 100% higher than they have been in the very recent past,” ComicLink founder and Managing Director Josh Nathanson said.
The top sale in the auction so far is the Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 9.0 Curator example which sold for $566,000, a record in grade that is 43% higher than the last 9.0 to come up for auction. Captain America Comics #1 CGC 8.0 CVA sold for $395,000, which is by far a record for the 8.0 grade and has even exceeded all 8.5 sales to date.
Other big ticket Golden and Silver Age comic book sales that were among the most impressive were Detective Comics #38 CGC 7.5 and Journey Into Mystery Annual #1 CGC 9.8 both for $73,000. Iron Man #1 CGC 9.8 sold for $33,000 which is a 77% increase over any previous public sale.
Bronze Age keys achieved record prices, in some cases doubling past sales. Just one of many examples near and dear to many collector’s hearts is Giant-Size X-Men #1 CGC 9.8 which sold this week for an impressive $40,500. In 2020 books graded 9.8 of this 1975 release were averaging sales of around $15,000. Incredible Hulk #181 CGC 9.8 sold for a record price of $60,000. Amazing Spider-Man #129 CGC 9.8 sold for a record of $24,250 while Ghost Rider #1 (1973) CGC 9.8 sold for $13,500.
The seminal independent comic book Cerebus the Aardvark #1 CGC 9.4 sold for $29,130 which is a 137% increase from the sale of the same example in 2019.
