A new superheroine is ready to protect Gotham City. In the Heights star Leslie Grace has been cast as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl for the new Batgirl movie. Warner Bros. confirmed her casting and Grace shared the news on Twitter writing, “BEYOND Excited to embody Barbara Gordon.” Accompanying Grace’s tweet were side by side photos of herself and 1960s Batgirl actress Yvonne Craig.

Grace made her onscreen debut in 2021’s In the Heights as Nina Rosario, the Washington Heights native who returns home during the summer from her culture shock experience attending Stanford. She is also a three-time Latin Grammy nominated singer.

The Batgirl movie has been in the works for a while, but has shown much more momentum in recent months. In May 2021, it was announced that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the directing duo behind Bad Boys for Life are attached to helm the project. Christina Hodson, whose credits include Bumblebee and Birds of Prey, is writing the script.

Batgirl doesn’t have a release date yet, but Warner Bros. has stated that it’ll premiere on HBO Max.
