French actor Gaspard Ulliel, who starred in Hannibal Rising and will appear in the upcoming Moon Knight series, died on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, following a skiing accident in the French Alps. On January 18, he was skiing in the Savoie region when he crashed into another skier where two slopes met and suffered brain trauma. Ulliel was 37 years old.

Peter Webber, who directed him in Hannibal Rising, tweeted, “Shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Gaspard Ulliel at such a young age in a skiing accident. I have such fond memories of working with him all those years ago on Hannibal Rising. Rest in peace, dear friend.”

Ulliel was born in Boulogne-Billancourt in France on November 25, 1984. He was a well known French actor whose career began when he was 12 years old in the French TV movie Une Femme En Blanc (A Woman in White). He turned in a notable performance in Jean-Pieree Jeunet’s A Very Long Engagement, for which he won a Cesar Award.

His first major English speaking role was in 2007’s Hannibal Rising as the young version of cannibalistic Hannibal Lecter.

Ulliel’s other notable roles included The Princess of Montpensier, he played French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in Saint Laurent, and he starred opposite Marion Cotillard in It’s Only the End of the World.

For the Disney+ MCU series Moon Knight, Ulliel will play Midnight Man/Anton Mogart. In the comics, he is a thief who becomes one of Moon Knight’s main villains.

Outside of acting, Ulliel was also a model, known as the face of the Chanel fragrance Bleu de Chanel.
