With just a month to go until Cobra Kai returns for season five, Netflix has released several images to preview the coming episodes. The biggest reveal from the photos is that the Karate Kid franchise spinoff is continuing its tradition of bringing back film characters.

Mike Barnes (Sean Kana) the vicious karate-loving bully that Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) hired to torment Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) in The Karate Kid Part III is back. His physical and mental attacks on Daniel included breaking Mr. Miyagi’s valuable bonsai tree, wrecking the tree shop, ganging up on Daniel with his buddies, and threatening to assault Daniel’s friend Jessica.

His return has been expected since Cobra Kai season four ended with Silver taking control of the dojo after he framed John Kreese (Martin Kove) for murder. Barnes is also the last of the main antagonists from The Karate Kid franchise who had yet to appear in the TV series.

The photos also show Daniel and Johnny Lawrence (Billy Zabka) with former foe turned ally Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) and new Cobra Kai sensei Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim). Other photos see students training at both dojos, standoffs between adults and teenagers alike, and the redesigned Cobra Kai dojo.

Cobra Kai season five starts streaming on Netflix on September 9, 2022.
