A greedy family gets their comeuppance in a macabre way in Mike Flanagan’s modern adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s horror story, The Fall of the House of Usher. Netflix released the first trailer for the eight-episode limited series, teasing the horror on the way.

“Ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth,” Netflix’s description states.

This marks Flanagan’s third reinvention of a classic gothic horror story at Netflix. His first limited series adaptation for the streamer was based on Shirley Jackson’s novel, The Haunting of Hill House, and the second was The Haunting of Bly Manor, which was based on Henry James’ novella, The Turn of the Screw.

Some of the cast members he worked with on those shows are also back for the new limited series. The Haunting series stars Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, Samantha Sloyan, Katie Parker, and T’Nia Miller are appearing in The Fall of the House of Usher.

Flanagan is directing four episodes and Michael Fimognari is directing the other four. The cast also includes Willa Fitzgerald, Mary McDonnell, Zach Gilford, Mark Hamill, Annabeth Gish, Michael Trucco, Bruce Greenwood, Rahul Kohli, Carl Lumbly, and several others.

The Fall of the House of Usher debuts on Netflix on October 12, 2023.
