Eddie Murphy is back as wise cracking Detroit cop Axel Foley for a new case in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Netflix released the first image of Murphy back in action, which was revealed by Empire.
Based on what we see in the first image, it looks like Axel is already getting into trouble. He appears inside of a small vehicle that is turned on its side, hands raised in front of two police officers. In an obvious sign that Axel has left the 20th century, people surrounding him are filming with their phones.
The fourth installment in the comedy-action franchise will arrive in 2024 – 40 years after the original Beverly Hills Cop and 30 years after the third and most recent sequel. The first movie introduced Axel as cop who is constantly joking and rubbing higher ranking officers the wrong way, but is also a very smart, keen observer. When a childhood friend is killed, the Detroit cop heads to Beverly Hills to find his killer and uncovers a major drug operation in the process.
The sequels followed suit, with Axel helping the Beverly Hills cops solve a series of robberies linked to illegal arms dealing in Beverly Hills Cop 2. Then in the third film, he searches for his boss’s killer, discovering ties to a counterfeit money operation at a California-based amusement park.
Murphy will be joined by series stars Judge Reinhold, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot, plus Jerry Bruckheimer is back to produce it. Taylour Paige is playing Axel’s daughter, a criminal defense lawyer who seeks help on a case in Beverly Hills. Newcomers to the cast also include Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Axel’s new partner (and straight man to his comedian), and Kevin Bacon as an LAPD special unit officer.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley is directed by Mark Molloy and will stream on Netflix sometime in 2024.
