Quinn’s will present 473 lots of high quality Asian, American, European, and Modern artworks at their Saturday, January 25, 2020 Fine and Decorative Arts auction. The sale will be held live at Quinn’s northern Virginia gallery, with all forms of absentee and remote bidding available, including live online.

Among the auction offerings are artworks by Tilsa Tsuchiya, Mort Künstler, Chang-Sup Chung and others; decorative arts such as rugs, pottery, porcelain, furniture, bronzes, fine clocks, silver and glass; works by Washington DC-area artists Lori Katz and Paul Reed; and Asian decorative arts including Chinese porcelain, silk textiles and Japanese woodblock prints.

A Surrealist-style oil on canvas painting by Peruvian artist Tilsa Tsuchiya (1929-1984), titled Perseonaje Rojo (Red Person), carries a presale estimate of $20,000-$30,000. The 1983 work, 10 inches by 9 inches (sight), is signed and dated and comes with a certificate from the Museo De Arte Fernando Saldias Diaz. Tsuchiya was a Peruvian printmaker and painter known for her artistic interpretations of Peruvian myths and legends.

A 1984 mixed-media artwork by Chang-Sup Chung (South Korean, 1927-2011), titled numerically as 85988, is expected to reach $6,000-$9,000. The large, textured monochromatic painting, executed using Tak fiber on canvas, is artist-signed and dated at lower right. Chung was a prominent figure of the Dansaekhwa monochrome movement, a synthesis of traditional Korean spirit and Western abstraction that emerged in the early 1970s.

Oil on board cover art for the March 1958 issue of Stag magazine by Mort Künstler (American, b. 1927-), depicting New York’s five days of terror during the Civil War, is estimated at $6,000-$9,000. The 1957 painting is signed at lower right and dated on verso, and measures 18 by 15 inches (sight). Künstler is an American artist known for his illustrative paintings of historical events, especially of the American Civil War. He was already a skilled artist by the time he was 12 years old.

A limited edition (2/4) bronze sculpture by Mimmo Domenico Paladino (Italian, b. 1948-) of a figure nestled with a red animal and holding a branch, carries an estimate of $15,000-$20,000. The untitled 1983 bronze, just over 15 inches tall and 15 inches wide, is signed and numbered on verso. Paladino is an Italian sculptor, painter and printmaker, and a leading figure in the Transvanguardia art movement.

A Baccarat “Milles Nuits” (Thousand Nights) 12-light chandelier, designed by Mathias in 1999 and made entirely of bevel-cut crystal, is cataloged with a $3,000-$5,000 estimate. The chandelier features 12 decorative scrolls with hanging hexagon and prism ornaments, including one signature red-crystal drop. Purchased 20 years ago in Paris, it stands 41-1/4 inches tall and weighs around 68 pounds. Original packing materials and spare parts are included.

An unsigned, 18th century oil on canvas Italian school depiction of the Madonna and Child, painted in the manner of Antonio Correggio (Italian, 1489-1534) and housed in a carved gilt frame, measures 22 inches by 17-1/2 inches and is expected to make $2,500-$3,000. The luminous Nativity scene shows Mary cradling baby Jesus while Joseph and three angels look on. The back of the frame has a red wax seal that is possibly of French or Italian noble origin.

A 1968 Gibson J-45 ADJ black acoustic guitar and case, serial #900352, is estimated at $1,500-$2,500. The guitar is marked on the headstock and pickguard “Gibson” and is marked on the back of the headstock “Clark Music Center.”

A seven-piece Poole “Old English” sterling tea set comprising a tray, teapot, coffee pot, kettle on a heating stand, creamer, sugar bowl and waste vessel, with a total weight of 286.23 ozt, could realize $3,000-$4,000. The Poole Silver Company (MA) operated from 1892 to 1971.

A Chinese hand-carved jadeite cabbage with hardwood stand, probably from the Qing Dynasty (1636-1911), carries a presale estimate of $1,200-$1,800. The jade is dark green, light green and brown, with small, carved insects on top. The cabbage stands 4-3/4 inches high (inclusive of stand).
