Hake’s Auctions current Auction #229 features over 2,000 impressive lots ranging from original art to historical memorabilia. The comic book section is stacked with nearly 1,600 lots, over 300 of which are third party certified, with a large selection of first appearances and classic early stories in the mix. 

Among the highlights in this selection is a Showcase #4 CGC 8.0 featuring the origin and first appearance of the Silver Age Flash Barry Allen. Along with a classic cover by Carmine Infantino and Joe Kubert, this issue also includes the debut of Barry’s future wife Iris West. 

Marvel’s first superhero team makes their premiere in a copy of Fantastic Four #1 CGC 6.0, signed in black felt tip pen by the late Stan Lee. Mole Man also makes his first appearance in this story by Lee with art by Jack Kirby. 

The Joker and Catwoman come strolling into Gotham City for their first appearance in Batman #1 CGC NG. This key Golden Age comic features work by Batman legends Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. 

Although Wolverine had a brief cameo in an earlier issue, his first full appearance arrives in an Incredible Hulk #181 CGC 9.4. Written by Len Wein with a cover by Herb Trimpe, this issue also sees an appearance by Wendigo. 

Thor, the God of Thunder himself swings into the pages of Marvel for his debut in Journey Into Mystery #83 CGC 4.5. This issue features a story by Lee with art by Kirby and Steve Ditko. 

In Four Color Comics #16 CGC 3.5, Dell launches the first Mickey Mouse comic book. Showcasing the story “Mickey Mouse Outwits The Phantom Blob,” this comic also features cameos by Minnie Mouse and Pluto. 

Ingenue Torchy Todd busts onto the scene in Doll Man Quarterly #8 CGC 9.2 with a cover by Al Bryant. Within the comic, panels feature lingerie and hypodermic needles. 

Silver Age Flash Barry Allen stars in his first solo title, with numbering continuing from Flash Comics, in Flash #105 CGC 5.5. This issue also includes the origin and first appearance of Mirror Master. 

Dr. Occult slips into his first costume within the pages of More Fun Comics #14 CGC 4.5. Jerry Siegel, Vince Sullivan, Joe Shuster, Leo O’Mealia, Tom Hickey, Ken Fitch, and Whitney Ellsworth all contribute to this issue. 

An Avengers #1 CGC 3.5 offers the origin and first appearance of the original Avengers team, consisting of Iron Man, Thor, Incredible Hulk, Wasp, and Ant-Man. The Fantastic Four, Loki and Teen Brigade also make an appearance.

Master of the Mystic Arts, Doctor Stephen Strange makes his Marvel debut in Strange Tales #110 CGC 6.5. This key Silver Age comic also includes the first appearance of Ancient One, Nightmare, and Wong. 

Although not a first appearance, an Archie Comics #2 CGC 5.5 does offer the chance to grab a scarce early issue. Featuring a Bob Montana cover and art by Joe Edwards, this issue is currently tied for the #95 spot on Overstreets list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics.
