Hake’s Auctions opened their Auction #229 on February 18, 2020, featuring a cavalcade of pop culture and Americana collectibles. The monsters/horror section always scares up some interesting pieces, with this auction highlight being the Remco 9” action figure packaging original art made for the window box packages.
Hake’s is selling a full set of box art for the 1980-1981 Universal Monsters toy line. The consignor obtained the art directly from sources at Remco and none have ever been offered before this auction. This selection is a unique collecting opportunity for monster fans and action figure collectors.
The Frankenstein, Dracula, Mummy, and Wolfman are rendered on stretched canvas with oil painting by Chronister. The Frankenstein’s Monster image is of Boris Karloff as he appeared in 1935’s Bride of Frankenstein. The Dracula depiction is of Robert Quarry from 1970’s Count Yorga, Vampire. The Mummy features Karloff as Imhotep from 1932’s The Mummy and the Wolfman images is of Lon Chaney Jr. Created for the 1980 toy line, they are contained in 17-1/2” x 20-5/8” wooden frames and the art is signed on the lower right.
The Phantom of the Opera and Creature from the Black Lagoon are on acrylic original art by Uldis Klavins on 19-7/8” x 24” stretched canvas. Featuring images of the Phantom as played by Lon Chaney Sr. and the Creature were made for the 1981 toy line. They were also signed at the lower right.
The auction also offers the Remco Universal Monsters boxed 9” action figures. Each comes in 8” x 9-7/8” x 2” window box and features glow in the dark face and hands as well as a glow in the dark skull and crossbones ring. Each comes with their own character specific iron-on patch.
There’s a lot of four figures of Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, and the Wolfman from the 1980 release. The Phantom of the Opera figure, which also comes with instruction sheet and separate hat and mask, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon figure from Remco’s 1981 line are in individual lots.
