Multiple pieces of art by Mary Blair, the queen of animation at Disney, will be featured in Heritage’s upcoming Animation Art Auction on December 11-13, 2020.

Blair collectors will have the chance to bid on around four dozen original pieces, among them is the single largest collection of Alice in Wonderland works brought to market, according to Heritage. There are numerous works from Peter Pan and Cinderella, as well as concept paintings for the It’s a Small World attraction. The auction features the painting To Good King Andersonia…Supreme Ruler House of Orange that is signed by Blair, Walt Disney, and Roy Disney. The painting is the only piece that is signed by both Blair and Disney and has never been available to collectors before.

“Some of the most talented artists ever worked in field of animation, and Mary Blair is certainly at the top of that list,” Jim Lentz, Heritage’s Director of Animation Art, said. “We’re extraordinarily proud to offer so many of her finest works in this month’s event.”

A transformative highlight is the concept art of dancing blooms for the unmade film, Fiesta of the Flowers, which shows Blair’s use of brighter and bolder colors. One of the most essential Blair pieces in the sale is the 1941 concept art for Dumbo, marking her first film work at Disney. There’s also an early look at a scene from Lady and the Tramp with the dogs singing outside of a snow-covered home.

Heritage is offering seven works from Cinderella, including the grand conceptual art for when Cinderella is presented with the magic carriage, the scene when she gets her new dress, the dance with Prince Charming, and the never-used rendering of a dream sequence showing Cinderella singing to the prince.

There are several Alice in Wonderland pieces, such as the scene when Alice grows taller than the trees, when she meets Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and several of the Mad Hatter’s tea party.

Seven of Blair’s Peter Pan paintings are in the auction, including Peter and Tinkerbell introducing the Darlings to Neverland, Hook and Smee rowing to Skull Island, Peter carrying Wendy on the anchor chain, and Neverland itself.

There are also four renderings from It’s a Small World, among them a large painting of the hot air balloons from the Dutch portion of the ride. Other featured lots are pieces for Song of the South, the live-action/animated So Dear to My Heart, the animated musical Melody Time, and conceptual painting of Pecos Bill on his horse.

“With this amazing collection of Blair originals in this auction, it’s quite easy to see why she was Disney’s favorite,” Lentz said. “It’s just one masterpiece of color after another.”
