Nearly 800 pieces of art will cross the auction block in Heritage’s International Comic & Animation Art Auction on March 13-14, 2021, including featured lots like a Charles Burns’ RAW cover and a Moebius Silver Surfer.

The rare Burns RAW #4 original cover is a black and white die-cut piece that was meant to reveal bits of the color cover behind it. RAW was a short-lived international comics anthology that featured underground American and European creators. It is remembered for stories like Art Spiegelman’s Maus and Burns’ story that became the graphic novel Black Hole.

“What I like about RAW is how it served as the link, the bridge, between European and American cultures,” Olivier Delflas, Heritage European-based Director of International Art, said.

From international art star Jean Giraurd (Moebius), Heritage is selling Silver Surfer: Parable #2 page 19 in which Surfer warns people of Galactus’ intentions to conqueror them, contradicting the villain’s declarations of being a savoir. This is just one of three pages from this story partnership between Moebius and Stan Lee as the writer that has come to market in recent years.

A rare Giraurd/Moebius offering is Blueberry Fort Navajo #1 page 17 from one of his earliest and best known Western works. The art for the French language book about an antihero in the American West shows Blueberry with Apache leader Cochise and the reviled Major Bascom of the U.S. Army.

“This is a museum-quality piece,” Delflas said. “It’s impossible not to admire the mastery of Jean Giraud, the delicacy of his line and the inking that made him a legend.”

The filthy rich Scrooge McDuck enters the auction with Don Rosa’s “Of Ducks and Dimes and Destinies” splash page. This piece first appeared in a Swedish publication in 1995 before running in the US a year later and appearing in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. It comes from Rosa’s private collection and is offered for the first time at Heritage.

The Valérian, Le Pays Sans Etoile #3 splash page by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières is a rare piece from the long-running space opera. It is one of only two or three full-figure renderings of Valérian known in existence and the first that Heritage has offered.

The Michel Vaillant, K.O. pour Steve Warson #34 page by Jean Graton sees real racing champs in the art. Race car driver Michel Vaillant appears at Formula One with racing greats Mario Andretti, Niki Lauda, Vittorio Brambilla, and Didier Pironi.

The auction spans comics and continents from Frank Miller’s Sin City to Enki Bilal’s La Croisière des Oubliés, from Hal Foster’s Prince Valiant to Jamie Hewlett’s Tank Girl, from Hergé’s Le Paradis des Jouets to Kevin O'Neill’s Marshal Law.
