Pedigree Comics has purchased a near-complete collection of Amazing Spider-Man, including #17-616, plus Annuals and Giant-Size issues. They will be offered in the company’s A-MAY-Zing Spider-Man Auction, according to Pedigree’s CEO and President Doug Schmell.

The auction is scheduled to begin in just over three weeks, on Monday, May 3, 2021 and last for ten days until Thursday, May 13 as a separate event on the Pedigree Comics website.

There is no buyer’s premium on any of the lots in the auction and every Amazing Spider-Man book will have no reserve. Every book is CGC-graded and the minimum bid is $20 for this auction. The comics can be viewed in the auction preview on Pedigree’s website.

The Amazing Spider-Man collection, dubbed the Southern Mass. Collection, contains well over 600 issues, including Annuals #2-3 and #5-19, and Giant Size Spider-Man #1-5. This is the largest and highest certified group of Amazing Spider-Man comics that Pedigree has offered. Most are highest certified and some are pedigree copies. Issues 17-51 are mostly graded CGC 9.6 with some at 9.8 and 9.4. Issues 52-616 are almost all graded 9.8 with a few 9.6.

The Massachusetts-based collector who compiled the collection became a Marvel comic fan as a kid. Through the ‘90s and early 2000s, he built his collection via eBay, other internet sources, through dealers, and at conventions. When CGC opened in ’99, he began sending his Spider-Man books in for certification. By the mid-2000s he started upgrading to get the highest graded copies he could find.

Since he had purchased books from Pedigree, he contacted Schmell in March 2021 to discuss selling the entire collection. According to Schmell, a series of negotiations landed at a purchase price of $425,000 for the collection. All 600-plus issues from the Southern Mass. Collection will be featured in the A-MAY-Zing Spider-Man Auction.

Highlights are Amazing Spider-Man #17 9.6, #18 9.8, #20 9.8, #23 9.6, #25 9.6, #27 9.8, #31 9.6, #35 9.6, #37 9.8, #39 9.8, #40 9.6, #41 9.6, #44 9.6, #50 9.4, #51 9.6, #55 9.8, #60 9.8, #63 9.6, #72 9.8, #77 9.8, #78 9.8, #89 9.8, #90 9.8, #100 9.8, #101 9.8, #102 9.8, #124 9.8, #129 9.6, #194 9.8, #210 9.8, #238 9.8, #252 9.8, #300 9.8, and #316 9.8.

Pedigree is now accepting consignments for the June Grand Auction. Consigning books sooner means that they will receive more exposure. Pedigree promotes and advertises each auction and sends periodic newsletters to all of their over 24,500 customers announcing the auction items. Pedigree also offers cash advances for quality consignments so check the site for consignment instructions and get your books in now.

The higher the value of the comics sold in a Grand Auction, the more money the consignor takes home under Pedigree Comics’ Climbing Scale as follows:

10% Commission
for any consigned item that sells up to $10,000 (Consignor’s Proceeds = 90% of the final bid price);
9% Commission
for any consigned item that sells over $10,000 and up to $25,000 (Consignor’s Proceeds = 91% of the final bid price);
8% Commission

5% Commission
for any consigned item that sells over $100,000 (Consignor’s Proceeds = 95% of the final bid)

There are three ways to consign your books to the upcoming June Grand Auction. The only criteria is that the books must be CGC or CBCS-graded and worth no less than $100. If you have high grade raw books that you want to have certified and sold in the June auction or a future Grand Auction, you can utilize Pedigree’s Raw To Riches Consignment Service, in which they will have your books certified under their account and will lay out all the CGC or CBCS-grading fees in advance for you (refer to the website and their Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide advertisement for all the details of the Raw to Riches Consignment Service).

To consign you can ship your books directly to their offices in Wellington, Florida. They will inventory, scan, and upload each book into the Grand Auction listing. The books will be listed under your personal account and you will receive email notification at the conclusion of the auction with a list of every consigned book that sold along with the winning bid made.

Email the scans of the books you wish to consign directly to them at DougSchmell@pedigreecomics.com. They will format and upload each scan onto their server and then put each book into the Grand Auction listing. Use a .jpeg format with the resolution set at 72 and the pixel width at 1200 for optimum clarity. If you do not have a scanner you can use a digital camera.

You can upload your own scans, item information, book or art descriptions and reserve amounts, if any, by utilizing their Automated Consignment System. Just register onto the site and login, click the “Customer Page” tab under “Your Account” and then click “Consignments” (under the “Auctions” heading). You will then be able to enter the Pedigree Comics Consignment Management System and list your own CGC or CBCS-certified books. Pedigree will receive an email once you have uploaded the scan and book information for each individual item into the system and they will then review the information imparted for accuracy. The items will then be added to the Grand Auction listing to be bid on.
