Quantcast

A unicorn is a beautiful, mythical creature, but in the universe of Marvel comics, it’s the codename used by at least four villains. The first version, Milos Masaryk was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck and debuted in Tales of Suspense #56 (August 1964).

Milos was a Soviet intelligence agent who used technology designed by the Crimson Dynamo and gave himself the moniker of Unicorn. Originally, he didn’t have powers, aside from being a formidable fighter and good with knives. His power came from his helmet. Unicorn fought Iron Man in his first issue and soon after when he was affected by Doctor Doom’s emotion charger, he attacked Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s wedding.

He created an alliance with Count Nefaria and went through experimental producers to improve his powers. Unicorn gained superstrength and endurance, and his soft tissue hardened to make him resistant to most physical injury. The side effect was accelerated cellular deterioration. Using his enhanced strength, he tries to extort money from the US government and challenges Iron Man but is defeated again.

On separate occasions, Red Ghost and the Mandarin each promise to help him with his weaknesses if he will work for them and attack Iron Man. Unicorn fights Iron Man again at the behest of Titanium Man, but is captured by the hero. He shockingly slips into a coma, so Iron Man takes him to Yellowjacket who wakes Unicorn and cures him of his disease.

Another bad side effect occurs when he goes insane and is put in stasis to cure him. Months later, Unicorn breaks free, though he is not cured, fights Iron Man again, then appears to drown in the Atlantic Ocean. Later he is revived by the Beyonder and is given a third eye on a stalk that can project energy. As part of the Infinity storyline, Unicorn is in the group of villains that Spymaster recruited to attack Stark Tower.
